Newbie Nail Tech Tips: 5 Things I Wish I Knew

3 minute read

Stepping into the nail industry newly qualified, without a f*cking clue, you're a bit like a fish out of water. There's only so much you can be taught in a classroom setting and that can sometimes leave you feeling a little... unprepared. That's where this blog series comes in - giving you all the info I needed but didn't have.

1) Stop trying to run before you can walk! Something I see far too often is newbie nail techs trying to do artwork before they really know how to apply and shape properly. I understand the temptation - who wants to do boring nails? Ultimately, you're making things more difficult for yourself. My best advice is to practice your ass off,

2) Timing doesn't matter. Like at all. Ignore social media; don’t pressure yourself to get a set done in a certain amount of time. It takes as long as it takes and most clients will be understanding of that. If anything, they’ll be grateful to sit there and be pampered.

3) Routine is everything. Prep routine, application routine, shaping routine. Do it all the same. Follow the same process and complete each step on all 10 fingers before moving onto the next. This will increase the consistency and speed of your work.

4) Good lighting is like a filter. Photography hack inbound! Pose your client’s hand, then grab your desk light & bring it as close to the nails as possible, without blocking your shot. Keep the camera behind the light as you take your shot & watch any imperfections simply ✨disappear✨

5) Charge your f*cking worth. From day one - I mean it! Set your prices to a profitable level from the day you start charging & offer a discount for model sets instead of starting really cheap & trying to increase later. It’s easier to offer clients a discount than to notify them of a price increase.
